GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) – While shelters and non-profits love community donations, sometimes items are unusable. Often, people donate items like food and clothing that are in poor condition, so it becomes more of a strain on the organization than help. Here are some tips to make sure your donations are going to good use.
The best way to make in-kind donations:
- Ask the organization what their needs are before you drop off
- Make sure it’s in new or excellent condition, and you’re donating an item that the organization will accept and won’t throw away….call ahead or check the website.
- Make sure food donations follow health department guidelines.
- Remember to get a receipt. In-kind donations are a tax write off.
