GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) – I love twisting because it feels so great for my back and hips. This variation is especially nice due to the supine position of the body. There is nothing that you need to do except to move in to the position. Then you can completely relax and just focus on breath.
Start lying on your back and then bend the knees to a 90-degree angle with ankles level to knees. Keep knees and legs together and arms extended wide as you lower the legs to the left side. If it feels comfortable for head and neck you can also turn your head to the opposite direction while you rest here. Stay here 30 seconds to 3 minutes for a more “yin” style experience and then try the other side.
Some things to note:
If you are tight through back and or shoulders one arm might not be on the ground. If this is the case, just prop a pillow or blanket under that arm.
Try to keep the knees positioned above the waistline rather than below as this is a healthier positioning for your low back and sacral joint.
Benefits of this pose include:
- Improves elasticity and strength in the core
- Wrings abdominal organs to improve circulation throughout the gut and improves digestion
- Therapeutic for lower back pain
