GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) – Here is a Yoga asana that you can do lying on your back! This posture, known as Supta Padangusthasana, can provide your tired legs with a great stretch and also has several therapeutic applications.
Lying on your back lift your right leg toward vertical and either hold the ankle, foot, big toe OR use a strap to hold the foot. Try to keep the foot in flexion, that is – reach the heel up to the ceiling and toes point down toward floor. If flexibility is more limited you can do this with the left knee bent and foot on the floor, otherwise your left leg should also be extended and resting on floor.
Stay here relaxing and stretching for several breaths and then repeat on the left side. For more variation you can also take the leg out to the side or across the body in to a twist.
Benefits of this posture include:
- Extension of the knee joint, strengthens joint
- Improves digestion
- Relief for backache, sciatica and menstrual discomfort
- Helps with high blood pressure
- Stretch for hips, hamstrings and calves
