Yoga tutorial: Child’s pose

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich (WOTV) – Need a little more love in your life?  Give yourself some with Child’s Pose.  Balasana is Sanskrit, child’s pose is a wonderful asana for beginners and can be done safely by most everyone.

Begin on hands and knees.  Widen knees now to a comfortable distance apart and then slowly ease hips back towards heels while lowering the torso between the knees.  Rest the forehead on the floor and arms can extend forward or along side the body. If this is uncomfortable for the knees place blankets, a bolster or a pillow under your torso.

Child’s pose is a restorative pose as it calms the nervous system while relaxing neck and shoulders.  It also stretches the spine and back muscles and gently massages the digestive and pelvic organs. Rest is this pose for anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes.  *Avoid this pose if you have a knee injury.
