The art of food at ArtPrize

Maranda introduces kids to culinary experience

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich (WOOD) Food plays a big part in our lives, in addition to nourishment, it’s the center of our celebrations and big occasions. For ArtPrize, Maranda decided to explore the “art of food”. She invited chefs from Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital to come cook and create with their kids.

Maranda also explored sensory perceptions of food with our friends from Artists Creating Together. We learn we can experience art through our senses. ACT shares a sensory bin full of oatmeal and cinnamon sticks and invites people to touch and smell.

Then there’s the singing plants at The Fed Galleries at Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD). It’s an ArtPrize entry called PlantBot, meant to help educate visitors about how we grow our food, GMOs that have been introduced to our agriculture and teaching people about where our food comes from.

Maranda also got a chance to meet some middle school honors students from Ridge Park Charter Academy. They have been taking a month-long MSU cooking class called “Cooking Matters for Teens.” and recently took part in a culinary challenge. These young cooks create a yummy Alfredo Chicken Pizza to share with Maranda.

Maranda is also getting creative with our friends from Milk Means More. Kati Mora helped Maranda create 3 different types of hot cocoa, chocolate raspberry hot hocoa, double chocolate hot cocoa, and pumpkin spice hot cocoa.
