GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV)- Anxiety is considered to be vata disorder, stress and worry that originates in the mind and then causes effect to the body. It can manifest as racing mind, fearfulness, insomnia, panic and nervousness. It is estimated that over 40 million Americans are affected by anxiety. Whether you are someone who considers themselves a “worrier” or you are someone who has been diagnosed with anxiety there are natural remedies that you can utilize to bring about positive change.
Natural remedies for anxiety
Lets start with diet. Being a vata condition one would want to adapt to a vata pacifying diet to counteract the lack of groundedness that is part of anxiety. Foods should be warm, moist and heavy. Avoid, cold or icy drink, especially with meals or at bedtime. Avoid or enjoy in moderation raw foods and avoid caffeine and other stimulants completely. Try to eat your meals at regular times and sit while eating- take your time with meals and don’t rush. Warmer spices are great for vata anxiety and this time of year is perfect for warm blended teas and warm nut milks.
Changes to lifestyle that can be helpful and healthful such as lessening computer screen time. Creating more consistency in your daily schedule where you can and keeping a regular sleep schedule. Incorporate more self care ritual like warm oil massage of hands, feet or head before bed. Try more moderate or gentle exercise and get out in nature whenever possible. Take up a meditation practice and set a schedule for it. Try to sit with eyes closed and breath deeply- count the breath in a slow cadence as it enters and leaves the body. Start with 5 minutes and over time build the practice to 15 or 30.
Herbally my favorite remedy is Ashwagandha. This herb comes in powder or tablet form and can be taken daily without side effect. It is an adaptogen and will help level energy levels and mood swings to keep your mind and body in better balance.
