GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) Thousands of children are headed back to school with new shoes on their feet, thanks to a program that continues to give back each and every year.

In The Image’s S.H.O.E.S. program is entering its 20th year. S.H.O.E.S. stands for Shoes Help Our Elementary Students. The organization partners with 37 elementary schools in five Kent County school districts to provide new athletic shoes for students. This year, they hope to serve at least 5,100 children.

It takes a lot of volunteers to pull it all off. In The Image needs 35 to 40 volunteers per shift to help fit kids with their new shoes. Members of Grand Rapids First Church came out to help recently.

You can help too by signing up to volunteer or donating $15 toward a new pair of shoes for a child. You can also host a S.H.O.E.S. or Sock Drive. To get involved, visit their website or call (616) 456-6150.
