GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) Going back to school is an exciting time, but it can also cause anxiety for some children.
Rebecca Busman of Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services says, when it comes to back-to-school anxiety, a little pre-planning goes a long way. She suggests parents get their kids back into a routine before school starts.
Different children can feel a different range of emotions about school, both good and bad. Busman says anxiety comes from the unknown. Parents can help ease those worries by asking children what they are feeling and help them come up with a solution to those particular worries. That might involve visiting the classroom ahead of time or checking out the school bus route. Setting up small rewards or incentives can also help them get through the day.
