GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV)- I can’t believe the big day is almost here. My baby boy is heading off to preschool. He’ll be attending school three half-days per week and I simply can’t believe how fast time is flying by. I’ve got to say getting ready for school is a lot more work and stress than I could ever imagine! In the last few weeks I filled out so much paperwork my head is literally spinning. From registration forms to field trip forms and medical forms oh my!
We’ve also attended a new families welcome dinner, a preschool orientation and a parent orientation. I’ve had to buy school supplies and I still have to label all of his clothes and a variety of other tasks. Who knew there was so much to do! In addition to all of the “mom duties” you need to get your little one prepared to leave the nest. Here’s some advice.
Get ready for preschool
Get your child ready by “playing school”. Work on following directions, listening to the teacher, zipping up their backpack, pulling up their pants ect.
Let them choose their school supplies
It’s time for a shopping trip. Get your child excited by letting them come along and pick out their school supplies. Sometimes a new special lunch box or box of crayons will really get them pumped for their big day.
Read books about going to school
Send a few nights reading books about starting school. Children learn a lot through storytime. Stop to discuss their feelings and any anxiety or questions they may have.
Visit the school
If your school offers a welcome night be sure to go. If not email the teacher and see if they’ll let you stop by to let your child see their room so everything is familiar.
