GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV)- The Olympics kick off Friday August 5th and our friends at WOOD TV8 and Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. are planning a free watch party for West Michigan.  Friday evening Rosa Parks Circle in downtown Grand Rapids will be packed with a variety of Olympic-themed activities along with a giant screen to broadcast the opening ceremonies happening live at Brazil’s iconic Maracana Stadium.

You’ll have a chance to meet some familiar faces from 24 Hour News 8, win great prizes and take home lots of fun freebies from WOOD TV8.  Activities include basketball, soccer, volleyball, golf and more!

Bring your family, friends and a lawn chair and come cheer on our athletes as they kick off the Olympic Games.

What: Bring your lawn chair and kick back and enjoy the opening ceremonies on a giant screen surrounded by fans from across West Michigan.


4:30pm– Join Maranda for a live taping of Maranda Where You Live for kid-themed Olympic demonstrations and fun!

5pm– Watch 24 Hour News 8 at 5pm & 6pm broadcast live from the Rosa Parks Circle stage, plus enjoy activities like free Olympic themed photos, free activities and great food trucks.

7pm– Watch “Olympic Hopes; Gold Dreams”, a special hour-long broadcast produced by WOOD TV8 sports director Jack Doles about local athletes competing for a gold! Plus enjoy activities like free Olympic themed photos, free activities and great food trucks.

8pm– The official Olympic Open Ceremonies broadcast begins live on WOOD TV8.  Grab your lawn chair and pull up a seat to one of the most anticipated TV events of 2016!
