Picnic Pops brings together food, music and family

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV)- The D&W Fresh Market Picnic Pops series is well underway and last night I had the chance to experience my first Grand Rapids Symphony experience at Cannonsburg Ski Area. It was the music of the Beach Boys and on a hot July day jammin’ to some beach tunes sounded lovely.

Being it was my first time to this iconic West Michigan summer event I wanted to do it up right!  I invited my parents (newbies to West Michigan) and my husband for a night of music and fun.  If you’ve never been to the Picnic Pops here’s a taste of what you can expect along with a few tips I took away.

How it works

First you can choose between purchasing a table or lawn seats on the ski hill.  I noticed the hill was packed with concert-goers and there certainly wasn’t a bad seat in the house.  If you purchase seats at a table then you’ll have a little bit more room to be creative and comfortable.

Next decide if you want to pack your picnic or purchase food at the event.  We loaded up on salads and sandwiches from Wealthy Street Bakery but there were lots of good smelling eats for sale like pulled pork sandwiches, brats, burgers and wraps.

Pack a cooler. Though you can purchase drinks on site you can also pack a cooler with the libations of your choice.  We brought along a few bottles of our favorite wine and of course some  beer.

If you purchase a table many people decorate!  I loved this idea and being able to take advantage of the beachy theme for the night.  We brought our own festive table cloth, a centerpiece, some candles (for ambiance of course), wine glasses, and all the fixins.

The event is rain or shine (which we learned the hard way) so if it looks stormy bring a few umbrellas and a few towels to dry off your seat.  If you’re sitting on the lawn bring your own chairs.

The doors open at 5:45pm and the show starts at 7:30pm but I’d recommend getting there by 6pm to setup and enjoy the pre-entertainment.  It was lovely (despite the rain).
