Help prevent summer learning loss

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOTV) As the school year winds down, it’s time to think about ways to keep learning alive. Experts from the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District have some inside tips for simple ways to prevent summer learning loss.

Elementary Age Kids

  • Make reading fun with a lot of choices
  • Remember I PICK to choose appropriate books:
    • I choose
    • Purpose
    • Interested
    • Comprehension
    • Knowledge
  • Find a book series to keep kids engaged (Junie B. Jones, Captain Underpants, etc.)
  • Find a balance: read to your children, with your children, and let them read alone

Junior High and High School Age Kids

  • Visit the local library
  • Find a reading program

There are ways to encourage learning throughout the summer. Get kids involved in everyday tasks. Bring them to the grocery store and let them compare products to see which one is cheaper. Have them help plan a family road trip. Read signs along the road while in the car. Pop in an audio book on long trips.
