5 Ways you’re polishing your nails wrong

Polished nails

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) — It sucks to spend an hour or more on a manicure to have it chip or look bad in the end. These five tips can help you master the basics for a beautiful finish every time.

Mistake #1: Not washing your nails before applying nail polish
Your nails have natural oils on them, which can prevent polish from sticking correctly. Take a cotton ball and go over your nails with nail polish remover, even if they aren’t polished.

Mistake #2: Not using a base coat
Before you apply color to your nails, they should be treated with a base coat. A base coat protects your nails from stains.

Mistake #3: Using too much polish
You don’t need to overload your brush, but you should apply two applications. Do a three-stripe rule: one strip of polish down the left side, one down the center and one down the right side, then repeat once more.

Mistake #4: Skipping a topcoat
Don’t get lazy at the end. Skipping a topcoat will prevent your nail polish from lasting as long as it possibly can.

Mistake #5: Not fixing smudges
Remember after you’re done to dip a clean brush in nail polish remover and remove any smudges along your fingers. It’ll be worth it.
