Road to Gazelle Girl: Erin takes on 12 miles

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich (WOTV) – We have been following Erin Bowerman’s journey to the Gazelle Girl half marathon with Sole Sisters. Last week, Erin took on something she never had before, 10 miles and she rocked it! Check out her latest blog entry when she takes on 12 miles:

Tuesday, March 15

Another beautiful day in West Michigan! Another day for running in shorts! I love it. Today the goal was 3 miles. It should be nothing after going 10 on Saturday, right? I think I was over confident and throughout the day I forgot to stay hydrated. The first mile was great but then the rest was a bit of a struggle and I became pretty dehydrated. Today was a good reminder, no matter what the distance is that I am going, that I need to stay hydrated and drink more water!

Thursday, March 17

It was a little cool this evening but the sun was shining and the roads were clear. My kids were at a school activity with their grandpa for an hour and a half. It was the perfect amount of time to get in my miles and have a few spare minutes too. As I was running tonight I realized that I put too much pressure on myself thinking about how quickly I am getting my miles in. I need to somehow get away from that and just get my miles in. One month from today is the big event! I think if I think of it as an event rather than a race, that might help me too. I am not in this to be the fastest. I am in this to make myself better for me and for my kids. The amount of time this takes should not be the first thing on my mind, it should be about getting those miles to be stronger and healthier. When I stopped thinking about the time it was taking I was able to enjoy tonight’s run. Next up: 12 miles!

Saturday, March 19

12 miles!! I did it! I ran 12 miles! There were points today that I wanted to give up and thinking I just couldn’t do it. My feet would hurt and then just below my knees but those quickly disappeared. As I started the run today I forgot to turn on the phone app that I use to track my miles. Someone from the Sole Sister group maps out the course for the day, so I shouldn’t have to keep track but I like to know how far I am in the journey. I thought I had started it but after about 25 minutes I realized that the app had not told me I had passed even a mile yet. I checked it and I had not started it. I started it then, but I knew I was off by a bit but I pushed through. After a few more miles I had to use a restroom, but I was not sure exactly where one would be that would be open. The parks we went past had restrooms that were still closed for the season. I kept pushing forward thinking I would come across one at some point.  I was also not familiar with the route and I had lost my map miles back so I kept the person in front of me in my sights. This part worked until she went around a corner and I had no idea where she was. I became a little frazzled and unsure I was heading the right direction but then a smiling face I recognized came my way! Thank you Donna! She ran with me for the next while and once again distracted me with conversation as we went up the hill that will be in the course in a couple of weeks. Before I knew it we were at the top of that hill. She ran with me until the next intersection and made sure I knew where I was going.  I was more relaxed at this point, but then the need for a restroom came back to my mind. Mile 10 and 11 were slow for me. I was exhausted and still in search of a restroom, not really wanting to go inside the Amway or places like that downtown. I pushed through.

As I approached this beautiful group of people waiting for me at the 12 mile mark I was filled with relief as I knew I had done it!! I ran 12 miles! And we were right next to a gas station with a restroom!

Thank you Troy, Kari, Anna, Linda, Donna and Jenn for hanging around and waiting for me to finish! Thank you to all the Sole Sisters for your words of encouragement! Thank you also to all my Facebook friends and words of encouragement that you posted as I went out today, every word means so much to me.

As I relaxed in an Epsom salt bath I began crying as I realized I am really going to do this! I am really going to run a half marathon. I did 12 miles today, I can do 1.1 more miles. I am going to make it! I am going to run a half marathon in less than a month! And I am going to do it for the 3 of us:
