ACTion Art exhibit celebrates local artists with special abilities

Artists Creating Together

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Artists Creating Together will be hosting the annual ACTion Art. It’s a uniquely designed opportunity to empower adult artists with disabilities to show their art in a professional gallery format, and to market and sell their work in the community.

Christopher Bruce, School Programs Senior Coordinator at the GRAM, has expressed his excitement for the event and its impact on the community. Bruce shared:

“This partnership opens the Museum to a diverse and broad audience while celebrating the achievements of local artists.”

Each year, more than 50 adult artists with disabilities are showcased throughout the exhibit. Three artists will be selected by a jury of local professional artists to be awarded $300 cash and to represent ACT in ArtPrize 2016. Jurors this year include Jenn Schaub (Avenue for the Arts), Brian Alexander (local professional artist), and Carol Johnson (local professional artist). ACTion Art encourages these artists to pursue their artistic abilities in one of the largest artist showcases in the country.

One ACTion Artist from last year’s exhibit shared,

“Thank you for your response [to my art]. It meant a lot to me because I admire [the] show so much.”

One other award will be granted to the artists, a People’s Choice Award, based on the artwork that acquires the most votes from attendees visiting the exhibit.

This award is $100 cash or the option to enroll in two of ACT’s year-round classes for individuals with disabilities. Attendees of the exhibit will have the opportunity to experience art through a unique venue that highlights adult artists with disabilities. For the past seven years, this event has brought in artists from Michigan and across the country in a celebration of “All Arts and All Abilities.”
