GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) More than half of the 19.5 million refugees around the world are women and children. Bethany Christian Services has a new opportunity to give them the chance of a better life in the United States.
A refugee success story in the making is 20-year-old Sunita Safi. She is from Afghanistan, but decided to leave because there were no equal rights, no safety, and no access to education. She went to India and lived there for eight years, but found the same roadblocks there. Finally, Safi came to West Michigan through Bethany Christian Services. She says here there are greater opportunities for education. She wants to go into the medical field and is in the process of getting her GED.
Bethany Christian Services recently received a matching gift of $350,000 to help refugees from the Middle East. The donation gives refugees a chance of hope and a future that they may not have in their home countries. In order to get the full amount of the gift, Bethany must raise the necessary funds by July 1, 2016.
