GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) Parents can comfort their children and guide them through questions after tragic events like the shootings in Kalamazoo. But sometimes one of those questions is the simple yet complex one of, “why do bad things happen to good people?”
Pastors Sam Rijfkogel and Tom Gallant of Grand Rapids First Church say it’s important to be vigilant, yet not fearful. They say God created each person with the ability to make choices, and with those choices come consequences, whether good or bad. Sometimes the consequences of someone’s bad choices can affect good people.
The key message for parents, according to the pastors, is to talk about issues that bring fear, and offer hope. They say Christianity is the only religion that has a God who was willing to suffer himself, which means he must know there’s a greater purpose beyond the world we’re living in.
