6 ways running makes you happy

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) If you have ever talked to anyone who is a runner, I’m sure they would tell you that running makes them happy.

If you are looking to participate in a 5k or half marathon make sure to register for the 2016 Gazelle Girl Half Marathon and 5k! This is a great way to participate in an event focused on encouraging women to live a healthy lifestyle.

Running not only makes you feel healthy, but it also makes you feel empowered.  Here are 6 ways in which running makes you happy.

1. Better Physical Shape

Running on a regular basis will help you stay in better physical shape.  It can help you lose weight, keep weight off, or even to strengthen and tone your legs and butt.  Running not only makes you feel good physically, but it also makes you feel good mentally.

2. Runner’s High

Have you ever been running for a long period of time and get a burst of energy?  This makes your run feel easy and exhilarating and it is known as the runner’s high.  Many people have attributed this feeling to endorphins, but according to Scientific America, “recent studies show that the brain’s endocannabinoid system also plays a role in the runner’s high.  This creates a feeling of calmness, and if you have ever run for a long period of time, you may have experienced the runner’s high.”

3. Setting Goals

Whether you are running to compete in races, to lose weight, or just for your own personal enjoyment, setting goals is a great way to make running a habit.  It makes people happy to know that they are working towards a goal, and there is no better reward than to achieve a goal you have set for yourself.

4. Social Activity

The running community is so supportive and encouraging.  Even if you are competing in a race, at the end of the day everyone is trying to improve themselves as well as everyone else.

5. Better Sleep

Did you know that running will help you sleep better?  The National Sleep Foundation states, “People sleep significantly better and feel more alert during the day if they get at least 150 minutes of exercise a week.”  This includes running!  Getting better sleep will allow you to be more focused and generally happy throughout the day.

6. Reduces Anxiety and Depression

Running can be compared to antidepressants.  “There’s good epidemiological data to suggest that active people are less depressed than inactive people,” says James Blumenthal, PhD, a clinical psychologist.  Running not only helps in treating anxiety or depression, but it can help prevent it.
