Food 101: learning proper portions

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) How much food is too much? How much is not enough? Portions have grown a lot and it’s tricky to know what’s normal. The Healthy Weight Center at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital helps guide children and their parents through the information they need to be healthy and manage their weight.

A good reference point for managing portions is using the palm of your hand. A serving for an adult is usually the size of an adult’s palm. It’s a good starting place to figure out serving sizes for children by giving them a fraction of that adult portion. Make sure to read labels to find out what a recommended serving is for a food. Make it fun and learn alongside your children by letting them use measuring cups to measure their portions.
