GRAND RAPIDS, Mich (WOTV) — One of the greatest things about living on the west side of the mitten is the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline. Having access to the lake all year long is a special treat. One of my favorite weekend getaways is to the tiny town of Saugatuck. I would pick a relaxing day in the quaint town over almost anywhere else. It’s peaceful, adorable, and there are tons of fun things to do. Since the weather is cooling down, here are four things you can do in Saugatuck:
If you’re a fan of cute little downtown areas and quaint shops, you absolutely have to check out Butler Street. This would be considered Main Street in Saugatuck. There are funky galleries and local shops, a little something for everybody. Pick up souvenirs or find one of a kind treasures.
“Visited for the weekend, walked the streets and went to many of the shops. There’s clothing, food, drink, antiques, drugstore, movies, bars, coffee, gifts, etc. Pretty much something for everyone.” – TripAdvisor Reviewer
If you want to get out and have an outdoorsy experience, Mount Baldhead is a great hiking trail that you can do after it gets too cold for the beach. There’s windy paths and incredible views. A 250 stair climb takes you to the perfect location to take in all of the beautiful lake and Saugatuck. Make sure you bundle up!
“This is a stairway up and over the dunes that will take your breath away from the exercise and the view. The stairs pass over and through a wooden area. Once you reach the top, you have a stunning view of the town and lake.” – TripAdvisor Reviewer
Fenn Valley Vineyards
Ok, so this winery is technically in Fennville, but it’s just a short distance away from Saugatuck. Great winery, delicious wine, and a fun place to do tastings with a group of friends.
“So much wine, I thought I was in Napa! Driving up to the winery on the back roads of Michigan through pastoral fields is my kind of fun, and pulling right up to the rows and rows of the very grapes you’re about to taste was perfect.” – Yelp Reviewer
Uncommon Coffee Roasters
Warm up in the chilly weather with a pit stop at Uncommon Coffee Roasters. Quality coffee that will perk you right up! They do have a small menu and tons of delicious baked goods.
“Always swing by Uncommon Coffee Roasters on our way into town. Great selection of small batch roasted coffees. If you are staying somewhere with a drip coffee-machine, have them grind a pound to enjoy during your stay. NEVER disappointed!” – TripAdvisor Reviewer
Hercules Bar & Grill
Hercules Bar & Grill is a great place to eat in Saugatuck! Tourists like it, but so do the locals! Lots of Greek and Mediterranean fare, friendly service, and a fun atmosphere.
“As a Saugatuck resident I have dined here many times and never been disappointed. The atmosphere is tasteful, classy but not stuffy. The owners are almost always on hand and active in the business and their attention and high standards show up in the service and quality.” – TripAdvisor Reviewer
