Preventing student athlete injuries

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) When kids are active, it’s important to keep them healthy. Spectrum Health Sports Medicine doctors say ACL injuries are common among young athletes.

Females are eight times more likely than males to tear their ACL. Spectrum’s Sports Metrics program retrains athletes how to jump and land in order to reduce these injuries. The best way to prevent an ACL tear is to understand the high risk sports, which include soccer, volleyball, and basketball for girls and soccer and football for boys.

If your child is in a high risk sport, it’s important for them to concentrate on mechanics, work on proper techniques, and look into a sports jumping program such as Sports Metrics.
