Checklist: emergency kit for your family

GRAND RAPIDS, MIch.  (WOTV)- September is National preparedness month and one of the best things you can do is create an emergency kit for you and your family. This basic supply of items are things you’d already find around the house and will need in an emergency.  You’ll want enough food/water/supplies to last foro 72 hours.

Basic items to include:

-Water (1 gallon/person/day)

-Food (at least a 3 day supply of non-perisable items)

-Fashlight and extra batteries

-First aid kit

-Whistle to signal for help

-Dust mask

-Moist towelettes and garbage bags with ties for personal sanitation

-Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities

-Can open for food

-Local maps

Additional Items to consider:

-Prescription medications/glasses

-Infant formula/diapers

-Pet food and water

-Important family documents in a water proof container

-Cash

-First aid booklet

-Sleeping bags/blankets for each person

-Complete change of clothing including long pants and long sleeved shirts for each family member

-Fire extinguisher

-Matches in a water proof container

-Femine supplies/ personal hygiene items

-Paper cups/plates/plastic utensils/paper towel

-Paper & pencil

-Books/games/puzzles for kids
