GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) — An organization aimed at bringing top talent and helping people relocate to West Michigan is holding its first ever online career fair Wednesday.
A total of 18 companies, including Spectrum Health, Steelcase, and Haworth, are participating in Hello West Michigan’s online career fair from noon until 4 p.m. Wednesday. The job fair will include positions in engineering, IT, manufacturing and health care among others.
“In the past we really went after our Michiganders now we are including them, but also anyone that graduated from our colleges and universities, as well as who has the skills we are looking for,” said Cindy Brown, the executive director of Hello West Michigan.
During the job fair, potential employees will be able to chat online, one-on-one, with area recruiters trying to sway them here to West Michigan.
“With all of the opportunities that are available our recruiters and our companies are getting lots and lots of resumes. This will help them set people apart, so they are actually going to have a conversation with someone,” said Brown. “It gives them (potential employees) the opportunity to ask culture, ask characteristics, what would I need to get back home or get to West Michigan, they can ask anything they want.”
Brown says in all there are around 16,000 open positions currently scattered throughout West Michigan.
“We’re around so we can educate people on the West Michigan region. A lot of people from outside of the area don’t really understand Grand Rapids, West Michigan, who we are,” said Brown. “Those interested in moving here we give them a point of contact so that we can help guide them and kind of steer them in the right way as they are looking to make a great fit in West Michigan.”
Brown says the hardest part is getting someone to come visit. But after that West Michigan does the rest.
“The great thing about West Michigan is the place. People want to come to a place and with everything going on ArtPrize coming up, LaughFest, the Coast Guard Festival, everything happening in Holland, there is just so much to do here, people are taking notice. This generation is really looking at place first. Because of all the great things that are happening in West Michigan, once we get somebody here they’re sold on it. It’s making them and continually talking to them and kind of nudging them to take a look at west Michigan,” Brown said.
The online career fair already has several hundred people registered to participate, Brown says people can register heading into the event as well.
