GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) The YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids is taking its focus on family health out of the gym and into neighborhoods with the new Healthy Corner Store Initiative and Veggie Van.
The Veggie Van started about three years ago to complement the YMCA’s cooking and nutritional classes. Team members work with corner stores in neighborhoods that need more access to fresh, healthy food. They meet with store owners and help to remove barriers to selling fresh foods, such as marketing and display. The mission is to make it easy for people to make a healthy choice.
The Veggie Van serves 42 locations in West Michigan, setting up for an hour in each location. It offers fresh fruits and vegetables year-round. Customers can use any type of payment, including EBT and Double Up Food Bucks.
