Make the dream of college education come true

GRANDS RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) A statewide college scholarship has helped a Grand Rapids woman beat the statistical odds against her.

Nikie Nevius is a Fostering Futures Scholarship recipient of Michigan Educational Trust’s (MET) Charitable Tuition Program. This scholarship provides aid to college students who have experienced foster care in their lifetime.

Being in foster care perpetuates this feeling of worthlessness. This feeling that I’m not good enough, I can’t do it. I can’t overcome this. I think that that travels into the adult life of a foster child,” said Nevius.

There are about 14,000 students in foster care in Michigan. Many of these students are deserving of a college education, but don’t have the financial resources.

We don’t have the same support system that most other kids have, but a majority of kids have parents who will help them with college. We don’t have that,” said Nevius.

With help from the Fostering Futures Scholarship, Nevius was able to afford tuition at Grand Rapids Community College where she studies nursing. The scholarship gave Nevius relief of financial burden and allowed her to focus on going to school and getting good grades.

It’s not a donation, it’s an investment. You are investing in our future and you’re investing in your own future,” said Nevius, “It is very important that money is there to give us a safety net to be able to go to school and make a difference.”

You can help fund the college dream of a foster child by attending this year’s Fostering Futures Scholarship Benefit dinner. The evening’s events include dinner, silent auction and live entertainment.
