ALLENDALE, Mich. (WOTV) More than 1,400 girls from around Allegan and Ottawa Counties celebrated the culmination of an amazing program with a 5K event at Grand Valley State University.
The girls all participated in Girls on the Run, a national organization that strives to empower young girls by teaching them to make healthy choices, stand up for themselves, and that they can do anything they want to do.
The girls meet twice a week for lessons and running games. The sessions allow them to train for the 5K, which occurs at the end of the program.
The 5K event is colorful and fun, with each group wearing unique outfits to represent their team. There are fun events like the “happy hair station” and painting their pinkie fingernails to support the Mean Stinks campaign against bullying.
