Free preschool available to eligible families in Kent Co.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) Kent County is launching its 2015 enrollment campaign for state-funded free preschool this week.

Free preschool will be available in 2015-2016 for children who are 3- or 4-years-old by Sept. 1, 2015. Half- and full-day openings are available for eligible children.

Parents who are interested can visit freepreschoolkent.org or call 616.447.2409 for more information and submit an application.

Free preschool is provided four ways:

  1. Grand Rapids Public Schools offer Great Start Readiness Program preschool for qualifying families in select schools, allowing children to move from preschool to kindergarten in the same building.
  2. Kent County offers Great Start Readiness Program preschool as well as federally-funded Head Start preschool for qualifying families in high-need areas of the county.
  3. Kent Intermediate School District offers Great Start Readiness Program for qualifying families in most districts, including Byron Center, Caledonia, Cedar Springs, Comstock Park, Forest Hills, Godfrey-Lee, Godwin Heights, Grandville, Kelloggsville, Kenowa Hills, Kent City, Kentwood, Lowell, Northview, Rockford, Sparta, Thornapple Kellogg and Wyoming.
  4. Some private schools in Kent County offer Great Start Readiness Program preschool. Participating organizations include:

    • Everyday Wonders
    • Grand Rapids Community College Lab Preschool
    • Grand Rapids Early Discovery Center
    • Hill Child Development
    • Hope Academy
    • Rainbow Childcare Center
    • West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science
    • YMCA of Grand Rapids
