Doctors: Know your risk factors for breast cancer

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Starting in three weeks, health care providers in Michigan will be required by state law to notify women if they have dense breast tissue, which makes it harder for mammograms to detect breast cancer.

Dr. Susan Ervine and Dr. Jane Pettinga, both from Holland Hospital, joined Daybreak to talk about the new law, dense breast tissue and stressed the importance of knowing your other risk factors.

Dr. Jane Pettinga says the new law is a good thing in that it will focus women to look at their risks. Dr. Ervine agreed.

“It’s important to know your breast density, but it’s important to look at the whole picture. Look at all of your risk factors. What you can do to decrease your risk,” said Dr. Ervine. “It’s important to get your annual mammogram and then also look at what supplemental screening might be right for you.”
