Human trafficking in West Michigan-Gazelle Girl Run is helping

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV)- When we hear of human trafficking, we often think of third world countries. Unfortunately, it’s happening in our own backyard.

“There are 2,400 minors that are available for sale at any given time in West Michigan.” -Becky McDonald, President of WAR International

Women At Risk International (WAR) works across the globe to rescue, with the aid of law enforcement officials, and to give a voice to those who are silenced. Women At Risk, International unites and educates women to create circles of protection and hope around at-risk women and children through culturally sensitive, value-added intervention projects. The organization also works to carry hand made goods in the form of jewelry and clothing at their boutique. The boutique helps provide money to rescued victims for handmade work.

Women At Risk International focuses on 15 demographics that lure a trafficker to a particular community. West Michigan has 12 of the demographics, which includes adult entertainment and tourism.
This year, as hundreds of women lace up for the Gazelle Girl Run, they’ll be paving the way for more victims to be saved. The run selects 4 charity partners to receive 100% of the proceeds from registration. WAR International is one of those charity partners. To register for the 2015 Gazelle Girl Run click here.
If you suspect someone you know is involved in this type of criminal activity or could be a victim, you can leave anonymous tip at 1-877-END-SLAVERY or go to the Women at Risk International website.
