KENTWOOD, Mich. (WOTV) Students at East Kentwood High School are about to embark on a competition that will test their skills at making robots.
The group is known as the FIRST Robotics Team. FIRST stands for “For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.” For six weeks, students on the team design, develop, and learn all aspects of the robot. The program helps develop their skills in science and technology.
The robot, “Johnnie 5,” has to be able to pick up totes, lift them, and carry them to two different scoring zones. In the competition, it will also have the opportunity to pick up a cylindrical recycling bin and put it on top of the stacked totes as well as take pool noodles, or “litter,” and push them to the landfill zone.
The FIRST Robotics Regional Competition is Friday, March 6 from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a .m. to 6 p.m at East Kentwood High School. The community is welcome to watch 40 FIRST robotics teams compete, including EKHS Team – Red Storm FRC #3875. Admission is free!
