5 satisfying comfort food makeovers

Skinny recipe

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  (WOTV)- Mother nature isn’t letting up and nothing sounds better on a cold West Michigan day than a warm meal of your favorite comfort foods!  Many classics like meatloaf and mashed potatoes and creamy casseroles can really add up in the calorie department.  If you’re trying to focus on that beach-ready body but warm apple pie keeps clouding your vision, try one of these recipe makeovers!  We’ve compiled a list of soulful classics that won’t reek havoc on your waistline.

Comfort Food Makeovers

1. Meatloaf Makeover

An average slice of meatloaf is around 300 calories and just shy of 20 grams of fat.  Add a generous portion of buttery mashed potatoes and you’re looking a calorie-rich meal.  By swapping ground turkey instead of beef you shave close to 100 calories off each slice.  Instead of mashed potatoes try steaming and mashing cauliflower for a skinny side.  Or pair it with a green salad.  We love this great turkey meatloaf recipe from health.com.

2. Fettuccine Alfredo Makeover

Nothing says comfort food like a big bowl of noodles swimming in a rich creamy sauce!  However that bowl of homemade Alfredo can easily come in at 400 calories or more per serving.  Bobby Deen has a great recipe makeover shaving over 100 calories off this classic.  His Fettuccine with Broccoli Pesto and Sun Dried Tomatoes will fill you up without hurting your waistline.  This recipe comes in at less than 300 calories per serving and around 12 grams of fat thanks to the whole wheat pasta and homemade sauce packed with veggies and protein.

3. Mexican Casserole Makeover

We love this recipe makeover from Cooking Light for healthy Mexican Casserole!  A great Mexican casserole is creamy, spicy and loaded with goey cheese and sauce.  You can still load up on those satisfying flavors without hurting your healthy eating habits.  The orginal recipe comes in at at 1,000 calories per serving.  Whoa!  The makeover leaves you with a hearty serving and less than 350 calories.

4. Loaded Potato Soup Makeover

Warming up with a bowl of creamy potato soup sure sounds good on a chilly day and Cooking Light is offering up a great version of a “Less Loaded Potato Soup” recipe.  We love that they knock 200 calories off per serving with this yummy version.  A typical bowl of Loaded Potato Soup can be upwards of 500 calories, not exactly a “light lunch”.  Try their makeover for a satisfying meal.

5. Apple Pie Makeover

Who doesn’t love to indulge in a nice slice of apple pie after a great Sunday family meal?  What you may not love is the scale on Monday morning reminding you of your weekend splurge.  Fear not, apple pie is not out of reach when you’re looking to live life a little bit healthier.  While one slice of our “makeover recipe” still comes in at 260 calories, it’s does beat out a more traditional recipe which is around 360 calories.  Here’s a recipe we think sounds pretty great for Walnut Crusted Apple Pie from myrecipes.com.
