Learn about birds during National Bird Month

Military macaw

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) February is National Bird Month. Maranda goes behind the scenes to learn about two parrots at John Ball Zoo.

Military macaw

Major is a Military macaw. Parrots are extremely intelligent and can be taught how to do things like “step up” on an object to be transported. Parrots can live from 50 to 80 years. The eats seeds, nuts, and even Cheerios.

Sulphur-crested cockatoo

Bali is a Sulphur-crested cockatoo. He is an education animal that goes out on programs. Because he leaves the zoo, Bali needs to have his nails and wings clipped on a regular basis. It’s not painful; it’s like clipping your fingernails.

John Ball Zoo opens for the season on March 1.
