GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) February is National Bird Month. Maranda goes behind the scenes in the flamingo enclosure at John Ball Zoo to learn about the fascinating pink birds.

The zoo has about 20 flamingos. Some of them were hatched and hand-raised by zoo employees.

Flamingos get their brilliant pink color by eating foods rich in retinoid; similar to what’s found in carrots. They only eat small particles of food because they filter food out of the water using their beaks. Flamingos are famous for standing on one leg, something they do to keep warm.

John Ball Zoo opens for the season on March 1.
