SPRING LAKE, Mich. (WOTV) An Ottawa County girl has turned her birthday parties into events that benefit her community.
Aubrey has held a figure skating party for the past five years. The first year, she invited her entire class and was overwhelmed with the amount of gifts. The next year, she told her parents she wanted to use her birthday party to raise money for other kids. Instead of gifts, she asked her friends to make donations instead. The first year, she donated money to a family who just lost their father. The next year, it went to the People Center in Spring Lake. After that, Aubrey decided to help Make-A-Wish.
On her tenth birthday, Aubrey raised $600 at her birthday party. With help from social networking and support from people and businesses, they raised another $1,000. Then Aubrey got involved in Make-A-Wish events throughout the year. In all, she raised $4,000 in 2014. Already since January 2015, she has raised more than $2,000 and has plans for even more.
Aubrey has been an inspiration to her family, teachers, and friends, as an example of helping your community and paying it forward.
