The facts: cold vs. flu

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) Cold and flu season is here, and that can cause some confusion for parents on how to treat their children and when to worry. Dr. McGee from Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital breaks down the differences between cold and flu and when parents need to consult a doctor.

Influenza Symptoms:

  • High fever
  • Respiratory issues
  • Muscle aches and pains
  • Vomiting and diarrhea

Cold Symptoms:

  • Stuffy nose
  • Cough

Benefits of Flu Vaccine:

  • Helps prevent influenza
  • Can help decrease duration of flu if you get it

Preventing the Flu:

  • Get a flu shot
  • Wash your hands often
  • Avoid being in public if you’re sick – stay home from work or school

When to go to the Doctor or Hospital:

  • If your child is:
    • Having trouble breathing
    • “Out of it”
    • Not eating or drinking
    • Not urinating
