GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) Everyone knows the musical “Annie” for the lovable red-headed orphan. But her sidekick definitely steals a few hearts! Two dogs play Sandy, Annie’s canine companion, in the production with Broadway Grand Rapids.
Macy and Sunny are both rescues. They were both trained by William Berloni, who has provided trained animals for productions such as Legally Blonde, Wizard of Oz, and Peter Pan Live. Berloni goes to shelters looking for dogs with good temperaments who can be trained to perform on stage. He takes them into his home and makes them a part of his family. If it doesn’t work out, they find the dog a new home.
One of the challenges of bringing dogs on a national tour is to keep them rested because they work hard in the show.
If you want to see Sandy in action, check out “Annie” at DeVos Performance Hall. There are shows Saturday, January 17 and Sunday, January 18. Check the Broadway Grand Rapids website for ticket prices and availability.
