GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOTV) Ten elementary schools in the Kentwood Public School District held a special event for students to bring their fathers or father figures with them to school.
The event Friday, October 24, was called “Fathers, bring your child to school day,” and it is the second year that it has been held. The schools that participated were Bowen Elementary, Brookwood Elementary, Challenger Elementary, Discovery Elementary, Endeavor Elementary, Explorer Elementary, Glenwood Elementary, Meadowlawn Elementary, Southwood Elementary and Townline Elementary.
“They get to sit and have some breakfast together. We have an activity where they’re asking each other questions then they’ll be able to learn more about the school,” said Carrie Tellerico, the principal of Explorer Elementary.
Each of the ten schools had a current or former professional athlete attend the event to give a special message. At Explorer Elementary, Thomas Kelley, a former Michigan State Spartan guard who played professional basketball, took the stage. Afterwards Kevin Clemens, a Jacksonville Jaguars running back, spoke at the event.
School officials believe the event is significant for a number of reasons.
“It’s so important for any adult, no matter who it is, to be involved in a child’s life so it’s impactful for them knowing they are supported,” said Tellerico.
