GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV)-October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and if you’ve never had a mammogram-now is the time to do it. One local organization is making receiving a mammogram easy by providing free screenings to local women. The Pink Saturdays Program is helping ensure that local uninsured women receive free mammograms throughout the month of October. Jordan Carson sat down with some of the women who’s lives were saved by mammograms through the Pink Saturday’s program.

Nearly every hospital in Southwest Michigan will participate and this year, 1,000 free mammograms will be provided. The importance of early detection and treatment of breast cancer was a driving force behind the creation of Pink Saturdays. Nationally, 55% of insured women get annual mammograms compared to only 17% of uninsured women. Women 40 to 64 years old can find out if they qualify by calling 1-800-873-0649.
Open to residents of the following Southwest Michigan counties:
- St. Joseph
- Van Buren
