GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) You may have seen some familiar people from around West Michigan with a large purple purse. The Purple Purse Challenge is a national campaign put on by Allstate Foundation. It’s goal is to bring awareness to domestic violence and provide education for people to have financial stability in order to leave a domestic violence relationship.
The YWCA of West Central Michigan is one of the organizations participating in the Purple Purse Challenge. In 2013, there were 4,000 incidents of domestic violence abuse reported in Kent County alone.
It is difficult for a person to escape an abusive relationship if the abuser controls the finances. The YWCA teaches people financial independence to give them the tools they need to stay safe.
You can donate on the YWCA’s website or Facebook page. They have a goal of raising $100 per week, which would enter them in a drawing for more funding. All of the money goes to organizations like the YWCA to serve victims of domestic violence.
