GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV)- Oral health is important at every age and stage of development. In fact healthy habits make a big difference when it comes to a clean and healthy mouth. Here’s some tips for establishing a great routine right away according to healthychildren.org:
Children’s Mouth Care
-Start by cleaning teeth at least twice a day. (i.e. after breakfast and before bed)
-Use a floride-free toothpaste for “training” and then once your child can spit and doesn’t swallow the toothpaste begin using a fluoride toothpaste.
-Don’t gob it on. Use a pea-size amount so they don’t accidentally swallow it.
-Help your toddler brush ensuring teeth get clean.
-Limit sugary drinks and foods. Focus on fruits and veggies instead of other sweet treats and baked goods. Also beware of dried fruits because they can get stuck in teeth and cause unwanted cavities.
-If giving a bottle at bedtime fill it with water only. Milk, juices, formula can all cause tooth decay.
Here’s some simple ways to keep teeth brushing time fun for toddlers
1. Start by giving them choices. Let them pick out their tooth brush and their own special flavor of toothpaste.
2. Experiment with brushing at different times of day. For example, your toddler may cooperate more before bath time than after bath time.
3. Finally try singing a song while you brush. This helps toddlers know that brushing won’t last forever, and helps keep it fun!
