GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) The second annual Shake Your Teal Feathers Ovarian Cancer Awareness Event will once again be held at John Ball Park Zoo, on Sunday, September 14, 2014. The fun run/walk will benefit the Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance (MIOCA). “Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecologic cancer. Most women do not know that there is no test but there are symptoms. It is critical to educate the public and raise awareness about the disease,” says Melinda Smith, MIOCA Board Member and event planner.
On September 14, registration will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. with the event starting at 2:00 p.m. Andrea Melvin, one of the event planners who lost her mom to ovarian cancer, says, “September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. We had a very positive response last year and are anxious to watch the event grow.” For more information visit http://www.mioca.org .
WHY SUPPORT OVARIAN CANCER AWARENESS?
Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related death in women.
The survival rate has barely improved since the “War on Cancer” was declared over 40 years ago.
Due to the lack of an early detection test, only 15% of ovarian cancer is diagnosed early.
September is National Ovarian Cancer awareness month as declared by President Obama.
A pap test will NOT detect ovarian cancer.
A woman diagnosed at the earliest stage has a 93% chance of living five years.
If diagnosis is at the latest stage, her chance is only 25%.
