Gazelle Girl Run raises more than $40,000 for charity

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) Checks are in the hands of four local charities from the Gazelle Girl Half Marathon & 5K. A total of $42,632 were raised and split evenly between the Kent County Girls on the Run, G.R.O.W. (Grand Rapids Opportunities for Women), YWCA of West Central Michigan and D.A. Blodgett-St. John’s Sisters in Support Program.The 2014 event was much more than a Sunday morning run, it was an entire weekend affair bringing in participants from 23 states and Canada. Friday night WOTV 4 Women teamed up with Fellow Flowers to offer a Networking Event at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. Saturday the Fellow Flowers and Grand Rapids Running Tours teamed up to put on a Shake Out Run showcasing some of the history of our community. Gazelle Girls then took over the Downtown Market for the Expotique and race packet pick up.On race day, Mayor George Heartwell proclaimed the day as “Gazelle Girl Half Marathon & 5k Race Day,” the Girls Choral Academy sang the National Anthem and 2,707 women, including one My Team Triumph team, ran the streets of Grand Rapids.

The women who completed the half marathon each received a special Michigan shaped sterling silver charm from imua jewelry, a division of Terryberry. The economic impact of this event was estimated by the West Michigan Sports Commission to be $654,646. The event was a Zero Waste Event and received a Silver Level certification from the Council for Responsible Sport.

Planning for the April 19, 2015 event is already underway. Registration opens October 1.
