Warning signs of early emotional problems

Sometimes babies and children’s behaviors may indicate emotional or mental health problems. DeWanda Gichemi, with Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, has some advice and warning signs for parents to look for.

Warning signs:

Infants – Birth to 12 Months:
Unusually difficult to sooth or console
Limited interest in things or people
Consistent strong reactions to touch and sounds
Always fearful or on guard
Reacts strongly for no reason

 

Toddlers – 12 months to 3 years:
Displays very little emotion
Unable to comfort or calm self
Limited interest in things or people
Doesn’t turn to familiar adults for comfort
Has inconsistent sleep patterns
