Hope for new moms

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) Sometimes a mother has a hard time bonding with her baby. A resource that can help is the Mother & Baby Program at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services. It provides treatment and a nurturing environment to expecting or new moms to enhance mother-baby bonding.

When a mother becomes depressed after having a baby, it can negatively affect bonding between the mother and baby. It reduces odds of playing with the infant by 20%, talking with the infant by 26%, and following routines by 39%

Infants whose mothers experienced postpartum depression are twice as likely to experience depression and anxiety than children who are exposed when they’re older. Also, infants of women with postpartum depression are more likely to have ADHD or behavioral problems later in life. Brain scans of infants of moms with clinical depression show brain activity that looks the same as clinically depressed adults.

Pine Rest’s Mother & Baby Program helps women learn skills to help them bond with their child. They can learn to manage challenging symptoms, find treatment to reduce long-term effects, and improve their depression and mood disorders. The program runs five days a week, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Pine Rest’s main campus on 68th Street SE in Grand Rapids.

If you feel you may have postpartum depression, talk to a medical professional, join a support group, practice relaxation methods like music or massage, or call Pine Rest’s Mom HOPEline at 1-844-MOM-HOPE.
