Camp Shout Out is the 2014 Connecting with Community Award Winner

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) The 2014 Connecting with Community Award winner is Camp Shout Out! Eight community collaborations were nominated for the award.

Camp Shout Out is the only summer camp like it in the nation, created for kids with fluency disorders like stuttering. For one week every summer, kids from around Michigan and around the nation travel to one campground to become great communicators. The camp is unique because it brings in speech and language pathologists and graduate students to work and learn alongside the kids.

Along with normal camp activities like bonfires, archery, canoeing, and a ropes course, kids who stutter receive speech therapy. Speech-language pathologists obtain continuing education and training from working with the students. Graduate students who come to the camp will have an opportunity to participate in clinical practicum.

Congratulations to Camp Shout Out and to all the finalists for the Connecting with Community Awards! If you missed any of the finalist’s stories, you can watch all of them here.
