GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) Summer is a time when families head out to the lakeshore or the pool to cool off and have some fun. But it’s important to also stay safe near the water. Jennifer Hoekstra from Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Injury Prevention has some tips on how to keep your family safe.

  • Adults should be active supervisors
  • Choose a “Water Watcher” who keeps an eye on the kids
  • Enter feet first into the water
  • Never dive into unknown waters
  • Use a Coast Guard-approved life jacket
  • Pool toys and floaties are not life savers
  • Be aware of surroundings; drowning can happen quickly and quietly
  • Learn CPR and review skills frequently
