PORTAGE, Mich. (WOTV) One of the important parts of the Air Zoo is the work they do restoring old aircraft. Right now, Air Zoo employees and a team of 50 professional restoration volunteers are working to restore an airplane that was under the waters of Lake Michigan for 68 years. The restoration process involves taking the plane apart piece by piece and cleaning and restoring each part, then putting them back together.
The Air Zoo is partnering with the West Michigan Aviation Academy to bring some students in to help work on the plane. They’re also working on programs where visitors can help, or emulate the restoration process.
