Volunteers help support preschool literacy program through quilts

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library of Ionia County is a new preschool literacy program that is championed by the ISD and all of the local school districts. It is a unique opportunity for the community to give something simple, yet powerful, back to all of the children and parents within the ISD.  Each month, from the day a child is born until his/her 5th birthday, a carefully selected hard cover book arrives in the mail.  That is a personal home library of 60 books for each and every child over the course of five years!

For just $27.00 per year we can make this happen for a child. How is the program funded? There are two corporate sponsors, Michigan One Community Credit Union and Professional Contract Management Inc, many community donors and a unique quilt raffle in Ionia.

The quilt raffle is just one of the ways to support the library, and provide books to children’s homes. Forty eight quilts are featured on display at the Ionia Intermediate School District. Each quilt is made by local volunteers, and are based on the book, The Fuzzy Little Duckling.

Tickets for the raffle are $5 per ticket or $30 for 10 tickets. This is approximately the same amount of money it costs to fund a child in the DPIL Program for a year. Tickets may be purchased at the Ionia ISD and at several community organizations. The raffle drawing will be held on March 26 at noon, and winners will be contacted via phone and posted on the Ionia ISD website.

It’s easy to give the gift of literacy through the quilt raffle, and also by donating on line. For just $27, a child will receive a book for a month for an entire year. For more information log onto http://www.ioniaisd.org/dpil
