GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) Many athletes train their entire lives to compete in the Olympic Games. 24 Hour News 8 Sports Director Jack Doles had the chance to talk with some key people involved, including one of the most sought-after press officers, Doug Haney, graduate of Catholic Central High School.
Haney handles the U.S. ski team. But the job isn’t all fun and games. Haney is the middle man between the athletes and the press. It’s a tough job that requires some thick skin, but Haney says it’s his duty to create situations where an athlete can have a positive interview.
The 2014 Games will be Haney’s fifth Olympics. It’s a lot of time on the road and away from family, but thanks to technology, he’s able to stay in constant contact with his wife and kids.
Doug estimates he logs about 100,000 air miles a year. He says the family uses those to make trips back to West Michigan during the summer months, when ski season winds down.
