Home grown Olympian sticks close to Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) So many amazing athletes come from all over the world to complete in the Olympics. One snowboarder and dad got his start on a ski hill in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Nick Baumgartner will compete in Sochi in snowboarding. While most of his competitors live in the mountains out west, Baumgartner has chosen to stay close to home in Iron River, Michigan. He says the support he gets from his community and the state of Michigan means a lot to him.

Baumgartner has a diverse history in athletics. He used to play football, which he says prepared him well for the sport of snowboarding. He made the Olympic team four years ago and won gold and silver in the X Games. And he’s already making plans for his next adventure, as he explains to 24 Hour News 8 Sports Director Jack Doles.
